2021 Loretta Fox Memorial Scholarship Recipients

The Murphys Volunteer Library Board congratulates Kiana Harker and Chloe Crawford for their outstanding academic, extracurricular, and essay endeavors. Both recipients embodied the Loretta Fox Memorial Scholarship philosophy.

Congratulations to both Kiana and Chloe. You are exceptional representatives of our community.

Haylee Nichol Maddeaux

Haylee Nichol Maddeaux is the recipient of the 2021 Loretta M. Fox Scholarship. She lives in Murphys with her family.

At Bret Harte, Haylee earned a cumulative GPA of 3.37. Throughout her four years, she was a member of the Torch & Laurel Honor Society, participated in four years of basketball, and two years of track and volleyball. She was involved in numerous community volunteer projects as well as official state positions.

Haylee’s essays spoke about the inclusionary feel of rural libraries and how the book, The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket, was the first of an amazing series that took her on an emotional rollercoaster about inclusion. She described the importance of holding onto her library card and how it “opened up a world of adventure.”

Haylee began her studies this Fall at the University of New Hampshire and is working towards a degree in Education.

Annaliese Juliette Hamari

Annaliese Juliette Hamari is this year’s two-year recipient. She lives with her parents and is the youngest of three siblings.

Annaliese was involved in arts and athletic activities for all four years at Mountain Oaks School. She was involved in ballet, pottery, swim, and cheer. She continues to be involved in community activities, and 4-H.

In her essay about her favorite book, Annaliese wrote about her honest struggles with reading, but having “a soft spot for libraries” gave her time to be with her grandmother. In high school, she found the library a place to spend free time where she found reading exciting and broadened her vocabulary.

Annaliese is enrolled at Columbia College for her general AA degree. She then plans to go onto Modesto Junior College to become a certified medical assistant or enroll in a four-year college for a degree in nursing.
